Your Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary, Ladies and Gentlemen, dear guests and partners. It is an extremely honor for me to welcome you to this special preview of the exhibition “Northern Women in Chanel” by Peter Farago & Ingela Klemetz-Farago.

In a few minutes we will enter a visual journey full of magic and beauty, but first a few welcoming words.

The visionary photographer duo Peter Farago and Ingela Klemetz Farago has, as part of an exclusive collaboration with CHANEL in 2010 and 2011, created full fashion stories featuring 45 of the most sought-after supermodels from the Nordic and Baltic countries. The project has resulted in a lavish coffee table book and a touring photography exhibition, both entitled NORTHERN WOMEN IN CHANEL.

The images of these remarkable women allow us to take an exclusive and intimate insight into the significant past and present Haute Couture and Prêt-à-Porter collections created by Karl Lagerfeld for CHANEL as well as the brand’s Fine Jewelry and Beauty creations. Thanks to the Farago’s sense of the pictorial, these photographs not only celebrate the fascinating designs they record, but also produce sensational reinventions, demonstrating how exquisite fashion, photography and art are intertwined, and how truly inventive they can be brought together.

The exhibition is breath taking. It’s magical and extremely beautiful. And it’s a tremendous pleasure and honor for Designmuseum Denmark to host such a superb show. The tight collaboration with the artists, as well as representatives from Chanel, has been a pleasure in any respect. We have learned a lot about pursuing uncompromising results. And the museum has been turned up side down the last weeks filled with beaming energy and a sense of the unexpected. Wonderful persons have worked together with our team, and as you shall witness the result is amazing. Thank you to all of you for making it possible.

NORTHERN WOMEN IN CHANEL is an obsessive staging of a very poetic theme. It bridges otherwise contradictory elements. It’s absolutely low key at the same time as it’s glamorous and spectacular. It’s delicate and ephemeral and it makes a powerful, persistent impression. It’s photography as fine art as in a painting of Rembrandt, and it’s photography that embeds the sensibility of a snap shot-like atmosphere encapsulating a fragile and vulnerable dimension of fashion. Each photograph could be regarded as appealing tales in their own right. Spanning from the enigmatic to an almost simplistic and direct expression. Fashion, art, architecture, nature and even folklore meet and blend together in this intelligent, sense provoking, absorbing and absolutely captivating narrative epitomizing the notion of the Nordic. The take is highly artistic and saturated with aesthetic sensibilities, so what can we expect from the images of  Northern Women?

As Karl Lagerfeld expresses in his foreword of the book, Northern women is about beauty defined in many different ways. A common thread, he underlines, is a kind of mysterious depth – a depth that also fascinates us, and reminds us of great talents like actresses Asta Nielsen, Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman, whose strong personalities resonate in the images in this exhibition. And it’s more than pure aesthetic pleasure to Lagerfeld, because the women “represent a kind of universality for the part of the world they are from. The claim to this kind of universality is never put into words by them; it’s just something based upon similarity of origin, nature and circumstances that creates this very special identity.” I guess one could say that, what Karl Lagerfeld is pointing at here, is the essence of the Nordic.

The successful inauguration of Peter Farago & Ingela Klemetz Farago´s exhibition NORTHERN WOMEN IN CHANEL at Dansk Design Museum in Copenhagen became the talk of the town. The photographs from NORTHERN WOMEN IN CHANEL came to life in this mid 1700th century building that plays host to the exhibition until the 8 april 2012. No less than 60 large format photographs and 25 intimate polaroids featured in the new title BARE MOMENTS are displayed in this exhibition, that was attended by over 1200 special invited international and Danish guests.

The exhibition of NORTHERN WOMEN IN CHANEL feature no less then 60 large format photographs, selected amongst the books 300 photographs.

Fashion photography has perhaps captured the times like no other genre. In the suite Northern Women in CHANEL, photographer Peter Farago and stylist Ingela Klemetz-Farago have realized their dream of photographing classic creations by CHANEL.

In 2010 Farago, in close co-operation with CHANEL, was given the opportunity to choose among collections from 1920 up until today. Several well-known models from the Scandinavian and Baltic countries, such as Freja Beha Erichsen, Helena Christensen, Iselin Steiro, Edita Vilkeviciute, Sigrid Ågren, Suvi Koponen, Kirsi Phyronen, Carmen Kass, Siri Tollerod and Caroline Winberg, took part in the project and every creation and surrounding were picked specifically for each model.

This is a modern, contemporary staging of the classic garments. Farago’s personal style is prominent in the pictures, inspired by opera, dance and art. A unique universe is created, and every suite becomes a fashion fairy tale. In the images Scandinavian meets French. The result is an interesting meeting between timeless clothes and melancholy in a barren Scandinavian landscape.

Peter Farago was born in Hungary and started taking photos when he was four years old. Among other things he has done covers for Russian Vogue. Ingela Klemetz-Farago comes from the music industry, but she soon started working as a stylist together with her husband Peter Farago. The couple works from Stockholm, New York and Paris.

Mademoiselle Chanel (1883-1971) was one of the previous century’s most influential fashion designers. Her life’s work is extensive, but she is perhaps best known for her opposition against standards and traditions. She created casual clothes for women, and trousers became as normal for women as they were for men. Today Karl Lagerfeld carries her name in fashion forward.
